Blue Birds

Mr & Mrs. BlueBird were enjoying a quick, quiet splash

which was suddenly interrupted by bold and chatty Mr. Goldfinch.

"Hey guys! I was wondering if you were a couple! I knew it! I just knew it!  So...what's new with you two? drink drink drink.  Mr and Mrs Bluebird shared a knowing glance which communicated much silently.

Knowing what a gossipy guy goldfinch can be, they pretended to be completely absorbed in their reflections so as to not give away any special information.

Mr. Goldfinch got the point, gave up, and went to check to see what the chatter and chirp was around the bird feeder since the cooler had been such a dud.

Mr & Mrs. Bluebird sighed happily: Their secret was safe.

Except what they didn't know was that other eyes had been watching their activities with interest as well.  What wonder filled these eyes over the next several weeks!

Four secrets chipped their way out of the eggs in 10 days.

At first the little fuzzball were more naked than fluffy.  They didn't look very cute at all.

Soon they started moving around more and calling helplessly for food.

Before long they had fluffed out, though still needing and calling on Mom and Pops for tasty foods to be delivered by the mouthful.

Their eyes opened now sleepily.  and grumpily.  No, it wasn't Mama there with food, just a stranger taking a picture.

So they snuggled in tightly to rest for the next feeding.

Then one day before we were ready, the nest was empty.

And then, one much-later day, a lovely immature bluebird rested in the branches outside our window.

How surprised we were when we checked the nestboxes to find a new nest next-door with two blue eggs.

Our delight jumped again when two more appeared in the next week.

Bluebirds will have more than one breed per season.

It is so fun to see these young ones stretching their wings and finding their territories.  Who will we see at the birdbath next Spring?
