State Bird Study
Each state that is part of the United States chooses its own bird, flower, bug, etc.
We studied the State Birds, matching them up on the map.
Some states choose the same birds, so after graphing out all of the them, we chose the top 5 most popular state birds by species
Then by family. It was interesting to see the difference it made to change the parameters like that!
We created and colored a graph by species, then by family
We're lucky enough to see all the top 5 State Bird Species in our own yard!
Cardinal
Western Meadowlark
Bluebird (Eastern)
Mockingbird
Goldfinch
Then we plotted out the top five on the map to see the geographical correlation and talked about some reasons it.
Cardinal states are all in the central East.
Western Meadowlarks are spread out over the West/North West, where there are lots of prairies and meadows.
Mockingbirds are predominantly state birds in the South
We combined Eastern blue birds and mountain bluebirds, and those were divided as you would expect, Mountain bluebirds in the western mountain states, Eastern bluebirds to the East.
Goldfinches are everywhere!
Finally we drew pictures of some of the most popular state birds for the cover of our booklet. We presented our findings in our respective classes in our Classical Conversations Community.
